A total of 56 new parking spaces have been created in the Varaždin streets of Miroslav Krleža and Tina Ujevića, including two designated for people with disabilities. The works, valued at €147,747 including VAT, were funded by the City of Varaždin and carried out by PZC Varaždin.
In Tina Ujevića Street, near house numbers 1 and 5, a new road structure with a buffer layer was constructed, curbs and stormwater drainage were installed, the road surface was asphalted, and horizontal and vertical traffic signage was painted and erected. In Miroslav Krleža Street, near numbers 2, 4 and 6, the parking areas were built using concrete grass pavers.
Deputy Mayor Miroslav Marković stated that the number of cars per household is rising, so the city is addressing the shortage of parking spaces in multi-apartment building zones by constructing new ones. "We aim to increase their number in residential zones wherever possible in the coming years," Marković said.
He added that alongside new parking spaces, priority is given to planting trees and preserving greenery to mitigate the urban heat island effect. The city, he said, does not wish to solve the parking problem at the expense of green areas.
City officials emphasised that they are simultaneously investing in cycling infrastructure and improved public transport, aiming to encourage residents to adopt more sustainable modes of travel, but they expect the new spaces to reduce congestion in these neighbourhoods.
