A modernised road, nearly three kilometres long, was ceremonially opened in the Križevci neighbourhood of Karansko Brdo on Saturday. The costs for roadbed preparation and asphalt paving amounted to around 230,000 euros including VAT.
Attendees at the opening included Križevci mayor Tomislav Katanović and his deputy Ivica Švagelj. Also present were Davor Zemljak, head of the administrative department; Goran Hrg, president of the City Council; Marko Vrbanec, deputy president of the council; and councillors Matej Bunta and Denis Maksić.
"In planning and implementing projects, we are not guided solely by the number of inhabitants in a given settlement," Katanović stated. He added that the city views Karansko Brdo as a location with tourism and economic potential, which are key to the development of the entire region.
Dubravko Mateković, president of the Prikraj Križevački Local Committee, assessed the project as well-executed and thanked the city leadership for its implementation.
Local resident Predrag Bičak recalled the history of the area. Karansko Brdo is an old settlement known for its vineyards and wine cellars. In the early 1980s, residents of Križevci began coming there to purchase cellars and land, eventually settling in the area, Bičak recounted.
The local community built the Chapel of Saint Vincent 13 years ago and maintains the blessing of wine cellars as well as celebrations for Vinjaci (St Vincent's Day) and Martinje (St Martin's Day). The new road was blessed by parish priest Kristijan Bogdan.
