The development of the neglected space of the former campsite on Preluk is set to begin at the end of this year, according to current projections by the City of Rijeka. The project, valued at 2,7 million euros, covers around 14.000 square metres by the sea, and under the co-financing agreement with European funds, all works must be completed by July 2028.
On the former campsite, the planting of two hundred new trees and more than one thousand shrubs of indigenous species is planned, along with the development of walkways, a central amphitheatre, a children's playground and a fitness zone. Birdhouses and insect hotels are also to be installed, reports Novi list.
Private capital is expected to carry out similar work within a similar timeframe. The consortium Projekt Preluk, which holds a concession from the County for around 3.100 square metres of coastline, has announced an investment of one million euros in the restoration of the years-decimated catering facility, the former Skala. The City of Rijeka manages a total of 22.500 square metres of maritime property in this area.
From the City, it has been stated that the large plateau of the sandy car park south of the road to Opatija constitutes a separate, second phase of the project for which a conceptual design has been prepared. However, before implementation, various interests must be aligned — from recreation and maritime property to existing concessions and transport infrastructure.
Simultaneously with Preluk, a 582-metre stretch of coastline along the Akademija and Kostanj beaches is to be developed. This intervention is valued at four million euros, of which three million are secured from European funds through a call issued by the Ministry of State Assets last autumn. The plan includes the reconstruction and extension of the promenade, restoration of sea access and staircases, new public lighting and utility infrastructure, and the promenade will be adapted for people with disabilities and reduced mobility.
With the implementation of both projects, valued at a total of 6,7 million euros, the coastal stretch from Kostabela to the border with Opatija will take on a new look. For the remaining sections of the western coastal strip towards Kantrida, deadlines are not yet known.
