At around 4am, the Javna vatrogasna postrojba Dubrovački vatrogasci (Dubrovnik Fire Brigade) received a report of a forest fire breaking out on the island of Lopud. According to current assessments, the most likely cause of the fire was a lightning strike accompanying the night storm. A forest mass on the southern side of the island, located above the settlement of Šunja, burst into flames.
Due to the extremely inaccessible terrain where the ignition occurred, the intervention was complicated. Members of the DVD Lopud (Lopud Volunteer Fire Department) and the Javna vatrogasna postrojba Dubrovački vatrogasci (Dubrovnik Fire Brigade) were dispatched to the scene. As part of operational measures, the boat Orlando was sent to the area to facilitate firefighting and equipment transport.
Firefighting forces are currently operating on the ground, and if necessary, air support is planned to be deployed during the morning hours. The objective of the intervention is to prevent the spread of flames to other parts of the island and to secure the surrounding area.
A similar situation was recorded in the Osejava area above Makarska, where a lightning strike on Tuesday evening caused a fire in a pine forest. The lightning struck the trees, leading to the rapid spread of the fire.
Through a swift and efficient intervention by firefighters on the ground, the flames were extinguished in a short time. Firefighting forces managed to prevent further spread of the fire, thereby ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. No damage to residential buildings was recorded, and there was no threat to the population.
