USKOK arrested two people in Split on Wednesday on suspicion of corrupt criminal offences. A special police unit, PNUSKOK, carried out the arrests and urgent evidence-gathering operations under the order of the office, Hina reported.
"These operations are being conducted in the Split area in relation to two people against whom there are reasonable grounds to suspect they committed corrupt criminal offences," USKOK stated in a press release, without disclosing details. Following the questioning of the suspects, the office will decide whether to initiate an investigation and request pre-trial detention. They announced they would inform the public in a timely manner about further proceedings.
According to unofficial information relayed by Hina, one of those arrested is a police officer. Investigators traced him through an analysis of encrypted communications on the SKY ECC app. He is accused of checking vehicle registrations several years ago and subsequently passing information about the vehicles to members of Marko Benzon's drug syndicate.
Benzon and Hrvoje Kelić, known as Medo, are charged with organising a criminal group. According to the indictment, the group smuggled and resold large quantities of drugs in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina between 2020 and 2021. The indictment, filed in April this year, accuses the group of acquiring nearly 1.8 million euros in illegal financial gain through drug resale.
