The US Central Command (Centcom) stated on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz is open and navigation is functioning, despite an earlier Iranian announcement that it was closing this strategically vital waterway, N1 reports. One-fifth of global hydrocarbon trade passes through the strait.
"The Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels wishing to legally pass through this international waterway," Centcom wrote on the platform X. "Iran does not control the strait. Navigation is functioning," the command added.
The same post noted that US forces are deployed and ready to guarantee freedom of navigation despite what it described as unjustified Iranian aggression, harassment, and threats.
US President Donald Trump briefly told CNN on Sunday: "As far as we are concerned, it is open." He also asserted that the United States and Iran had recently reached an agreement which was soon breached.
"Yesterday we had an agreement with them. They were backing down on everything, and then suddenly, two hours later, they hit a ship with a drone. We responded last night with a powerful strike," Trump said.
Iran earlier on Sunday announced the closure of the strait "until further notice," following renewed hostilities with the United States. "Until the end of American operations in this region, no ship will be allowed to pass," the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced.
