The United States launched attacks on Iran on Saturday evening, to which Tehran responded by declaring the re-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports. According to available information, the attacks began at 19:15 local time.
The escalation followed an incident involving the container ship M/V GFS Galaxy, flying the Cypriot flag, after which Iran fired a warning shot, stating the vessel had sailed on an "unapproved route". The ship sustained significant engine room damage, and one civilian crew member is listed as missing.
In its retaliation, Iran destroyed a command centre and drone hangar in Jordan, and attacked Gulf states. The United Arab Emirates activated air defence systems, Qatar intercepted a missile attack, and warning sirens were sounded in Bahrain.
US President Donald Trump declared an end to the ceasefire that had been in effect since 28 February, and Washington revoked the permit for Iranian oil sales. Tehran has stated that the strait will remain closed until the "end of US interference".
The consequences are already being felt in the markets: energy prices are rising, including petrol in the US.
