Russia carried out a wave of ballistic missile strikes on Ukrainian cities in the night into Sunday, in which four people were killed and at least 36 injured, according to the BBC.
Three men aged between 24 and 62 were killed in Kharkiv, and 20 people were injured. According to Governor Oleh Syniehubov, a postal terminal in the suburbs was hit in the city. In Kyiv, one person was killed and 16 injured.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski described the attack on the capital as "one of the largest ballistic attacks" since the start of the Russian invasion. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 41 missiles were used in the attack, including Iskanders and hypersonic Zircon missiles, along with 125 drones. Air defence shot down 18 missiles and 108 drones.
The Guardian reports that the attack on Kyiv lasted around five hours. The first sirens sounded at 1.30, with a second wave following at 6.30. A three-storey building in the city centre burned down, from which rescuers recovered the body of the deceased person. The Lukyanivska metro station was temporarily closed after part of the ceiling collapsed due to the shockwave.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that residential and commercial buildings were damaged, including a supermarket and a care home. Firefighters were extinguishing fires in two warehouses, and a logistics centre was hit in Bucha near Kyiv, injuring two people.
Zelenski noted that Russia had fired around 1,450 drones, over 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles at Ukraine in the past week. Ukraine continues to strike Russian infrastructure. According to the BBC, three tankers in the Black Sea and fuel storage facilities in the Stavropol region were hit. The day before, Ukrainian drones destroyed two warehouses belonging to Russia's largest online retailer Wildberries, killing eight people.
According to United Nations data, June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, with at least 293 killed.
