Russia carried out a large-scale nighttime missile attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region early on Sunday. At least one person was killed in the strike, and 13 were injured.
Russian forces launched over 20 projectiles at targets within and around the Ukrainian capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage and attacks recorded in several city districts.
Fires broke out in multiple locations, including a student dormitory, a residential building, and a supermarket. In the Solomjanskyi district, a residential building was hit, while a fire broke out in a shop in the same district. In the Svjatošynskyi district, a house caught fire, and attacks were recorded in a shopping centre in the Dniprovskyi district. A residential building was also damaged in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
AFP journalists in Kyiv heard explosions, one of which was so powerful it triggered car alarm systems. The Ukrainian Air Force had earlier warned residents about ballistic missiles.
The war is now in its fifth year, with Ukraine facing almost daily attacks by drones and ballistic missiles. The situation in Ukraine has been further complicated by political instability caused by the sudden restructuring of military leadership.
On Saturday, Ukraine responded with drone attacks on internet retail warehouses in Russia's Moscow and Tambov regions. Eight people were killed in those strikes, which caused major fires. The Ukrainian Air Force stated on Telegram that Kyiv had launched a series of attacks on those targets.
