A child died on Friday afternoon in the eastern part of Zagreb County after falling into a water-filled excavation in an unenclosed garden of a family home, Zagreb police reported.
According to a statement from the Zagreb Police Administration, the accident occurred on 17 July in the afternoon, most likely during play. The excavation into which the child fell is 55 by 13 metres and was filled with water approximately one metre deep.
"A family member spotted the child and attempted to help until medical assistance arrived, but the child died," the police statement said.
The child's body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Criminology in Zagreb, where the exact cause of death will be determined.
