Spain are the new football world champions. In the World Cup final in New Jersey, USA, they defeated Argentina 1-0, with the only goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time. This is Spain's second world title in their history.
With their final victory, "La Roja" also achieved a record in international football: they have remained unbeaten in 38 consecutive official matches, surpassing Italy's previous record of 37 games.
Spain's unbeaten streak dates back to March 2024, when they lost 0-1 to Colombia in a friendly match in London. Since then, they have recorded 29 wins and nine draws, culminating in their world championship title.
The scorer of the decisive goal carries special symbolism. It was the 26-year-old Barcelona striker who, in October 2021, scored both goals in San Siro in Spain's 2-1 victory over Italy in the Nations League semi-final, ending Italy's historic 37-match unbeaten run at the time.
The first opportunity to break Spain's record will come against England, who host the world champions on 26 September in London, as part of the Nations League group stage. Three days later, Spain play Croatia, who have the chance to face the new champions just two months after the end of the World Cup. The group also includes the Czech Republic.
